West Texas A&M University, established in 1910 and a Member of the Texas A&M University System, is the northernmost senior institution of higher education in the state. Located 12 miles south of Amarillo, population 160,000, in the rural community of Canyon, population 13,000, WTAMU serves a five-state region and is the most accessible university for many residents of Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico and Oklahoma as well as Texas. The University offers 61 undergraduate and 42 graduate degree programs to approximately 6,700 students within a four-college, one-school structure: College of Agriculture, Nursing and Natural Science; College of Education and Social Sciences; Sybil B. Harrington College of Fine Arts and Humanities; T. Boone Pickens College of Business; and the Graduate School. WTAMU offers online degrees for the MBA and the MEd in Instructional Education. Online undergraduate programs include Emergency Management Administration and other courses. In addition to the landscaped 135-acre residential campus, the University operates a number of special facilities including the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, the WTAMU Horse Center, Nance Ranch and the Alternative Energy Institute.
